Rare Ammolite from Alberta Canada is set in this unique rustic ring. Set on a beaded style sterling silver band, this Ammolite displays a predominate green flash of color with hints of orange and gold when viewed from different angles. The band and setting has been given a dark, rustic patina that compliments the textures and this rare fossilized gemstone. The Ammolite specimen in this ring is bezel set in sterling silver and measures approximately 16mm x 8mm. This Ammolite specimen has a clear protective top on the stone making it more durable and to help protect it from minor bumps.

The play of color and color flash of Ammolite make it very difficult to photograph. I have shown this piece at various angles to give you a visual sense of the colors from different angles.

Ammolite is mined only in Alberta, Canada, not far from where I live. It was recognized by the International Colored Gemstone Commission (ICGC) in 1981 as a new organic gemstone and is also considered the rarest gemstone in the world. Ammolite is the mineralized remains of an ammonite, a creature that swam the oceans from the Paleozoic to the end of the Cretaceous era 65 to 70 million years ago. Fossilized ammonites are found all over the world, but supplies of the colorful iridescent gem quality Ammolite are found ONLY in southern Alberta, Canada, and only about 5% of this material is considered gemstone material.

Ammolite was discovered by the native Indian Blackfoot tribe and is still highly regarded by them to ward off evil spirits. Students of Feng Shui believe that Ammolite absorbed the knowledge of the universe. The colors of Ammolite represent the harmonious balance of fire, earth, metal, water, and wood.
